When Do Leap Year Babies Celebrate Their Birthday, Today, Tomorrow, Both?

Only .07% of the population has this situation apply to them. The rest of us may have never even thought about it seriously. When do leap year babies celebrate their birthdays?

2024 is a leap year, but 2023 is not. Somebody on Reddit asked “Leaplings” (people born on February 29th of a Leap Year) to weigh in on when they celebrate their birthday in non-Leap Years … today (2/28) … tomorrow (3/1) … or both? The general consensus seems to be that there really is not a consensus at all.

Some seem to prefer to at least keep it in February by celebrating on the 28th. Others choose March 1st because doing it a day early seems wrong. Some people stated that their parents would celebrate on both the 28th and the 1st for them (Getting two since the actual date only came around every four years seems like a decent trade-off). There are a few die-hard Leaplings that only celebrate every four years when there actually IS a February 29th.

When it comes to legally drinking, Leaplings cannot be served alcohol until midnight on March 1st if their 21st year comes in a non-Leap Year, in case you were wondering. If you want to stick to the diehard belief, a Leapling cannot have a legal drink until they have been on the earth 84 years, the span it takes to cover 21 Leap Years.
