Today (11/11) is Veterans Day. A recent survey Cohen Veterans Network put up an online Veterans Day Pop Quiz. Here are five things many people got wrong on that quiz about our military and veterans.

  1. Only 14% knew there are six branches in the U.S. Military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and the new Space Force.
  2. Most Americans think all members of the armed services are called “soldiers.” However, Soldiers are only in the Army. The rest are called Marines (Marines), Airmen (Air Force), Sailors (Navy), Coast Guardsmen (Coast Guard) and Guardians (Space Force).
  3. Most Americans have no idea what percentage of the population has served in the military. The Veterans Association says there are around 19 million veterans of the U.S. Military. That equals about 7% of the adult population in the U.S.
  4. The answer “Not Sure” was chosen by 57% of Americans as to how many service members make up the National Guard and Military Reserves. There are approximately 800,000 members in the National Guard and Reserves. That equates to about 33% of our overall military.
  5. Seven out of ten people had no idea how many service members leave the military for civilian life each year. The U.S. Department of Labor says that number is approximately 200,000 men and women annually.

To all the men and women who have served, are serving and will serve … Thank You!
