Self-checkout is likely not going to go away. However, a criminal defense attorney on TikTok says you should NEVER use it.

Her name is Carrie Jernigan, and she says using self-checkout is too risky. She states that there is an easy chance you can get falsely arrested for shoplifting.

Stores have large, sophisticated teams examining tapes of self-checkout and looking for people who are shoplifting. If you accidentally put something in your bag without scanning it and they see it on the tapes, your troubles could begin. Carrie says they could even make a mistake in inventory and falsely accuse you of shoplifting. Either way the stress of this nightmare will cost you a lot of money to straighten out.

Carrie states that if you must use self-checkout there are four things you can do to help protect yourself. Only use it on small orders. Use a credit card for proof of what you paid for. Keep your receipt. Go slowly so the camera can see everything you scan.

Do you prefer self-checkout? Why or why not?
