L.A. Family Finds One Million Pennies in Parents’ Basement [VIDEO]

When it comes time to go through your parents’ stuff after they pass, it can be like going through junk or finding treasure.

John Reyes and his wife found a fortune in pennies when they were cleaning out his father’s home in L.A. last year. They found one million pennies in a tight crawlspace in the basement. So you don’t have to do the math, one million pennies add up to $10,000.

The bad news is that no banks want to take the ton of pennies. They just don’t have space for them in their vault apparently. The couple does not want to lose 8% by taking them to Coinstar. Plus, that many pennies could clog up the machine.

The couple does not know exactly how old the pennies are. However, they do know they are copper not zinc. That means they are older than when production of pennies switched to zinc in the 80s.

They have offered the pennies for sale online for $25,000 with the belief that there are likely some rare pennies in the collection of one million. So far, nobody has made an offer close enough to the price to get them to sell.

John has no real idea why his parents stashed that many pennies away. He speculates they thought they would be worth more money in the future.
