Today is the 18th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on America. No one will ever forget. Anyone who was alive on 9/11 remembers the horror that unfolded that day, and we will never forget where we were when we heard the news, or how it made us feel.

For months following, it was hard to put into words the emotions that we felt, but people like Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, and Darryl Worley sat down and put into song what so many of us were feeling at the time.

What is your favorite 9/11 inspired country song?

Here are a few of mine!

Alan Jackson went for a walk on September 11th and heard about the attacks when he got back home. Alan says he woke up one morning in October, and the song had come to him in his sleep. He finished writing the song that day.

This song was inspired by 9/11, but also by Toby’s father, who was killed in a car accident 6 months before. Toby imagined how his father would have reacted to terrorist attacks, and the hit was born.

Darryl was Toby’s labelmate and on the USO tour with him. He was inspired to write this song when he came back from his first USO tour.

Tippin wrote this song for his album “People Like Us” which was released in 2000, but it didn’t make the cut. Two days after the 9/11 attacks he went into the studio to record this song and it was on radio airwaves by Monday. The song obviously had a greater purpose.

In the days after 9/11, Hank rewrote the words to his 1982 hit “Country Boy Will Survive” to “America Will Survive.” He performed this version on a CMT special in November 2001.
