The folks over at Esquire recently brought up a really good point after the dust settled following Marvel’s reveal of the MCU’s phase 4 projects. “Where in the hell is Deadpool?”
It’s a good point. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the gold standard of super hero movies over the last decade, the Deadpool films, starring Ryan Reynolds, have been right there in terms of quality.
The biggest issue standing in the way of ‘Deadpool 3’ is the now completed Disney/Fox merger. The first two ‘Deadpool’ movies were released by Fox but now the hyper violent and foul mouthed hero are under the Disney umbrella.
In an interview with Uproxx, ‘Deadpool 2’ director David Leitch said this about whether he’s heard from Disney about ‘Deadpool 3’, “I (haven’t), honestly. And it’s not for my lack of trying. And I also want to give (up)– I’m just giving everybody their time.”
Well…that didn’t sound positive. He continued, “I know Marvel announced their slate and I think people were like, “Deadpool’s not on it.” I would never say never.”
For what it is worth, Disney has said in the past that they want more R-rated ‘Deadpool’ movies.
Honestly though, I would bet on ‘Deadpool 3’ happening. For one, they are a HUGE money maker and the first two have been critical successes. Disney likes to make money so I can’t imagine a world in which they will say ‘no’ to a big box office hull.
Will Deadpool ever enter in the MCU though? That’s an entirely different question. I wouldn’t be surprised if Deadpool remains in his own separate universe.
