This morning Lucusfilm announced that Academy Award winning director Ron Howard will assume the remaining directorial responsibilities for the nameless ‘Han Solo’ stand along movie.
This news stems from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller leaving the film a few days ago over creative differences.
Now, this stuff usually happens all the time. Heck, even ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ had creative issues before it’s release. However, according to the Hollywood Reporter, there was only 3 weeks left in shooting the movie!
How bad must things have been for the directors to leave only weeks from finishing the shoot???
“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project,” a statement from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller said according to The Hollywood Reporter.
And Disney’s response…
“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways,” Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm stated in an official statement.
AWKWARD!
Any who, Ron Howard is now the man leading the film and, boy….
See what I did there?
Listen, Ron Howard is an excellent director. His resume includes ‘Apollo 13’, ‘A Beautiful Mind’, and ‘The Da Vinci Code’, so there is no doubting his credentials. But he is a very different director compared to Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are most well known for directing ‘The Lego Movie’ and ’21 Jump Street’. I’m nervous on how the changes made in the director’s chairs will change the flow of the film and more importantly, impact the final product. It is very hard for a new director to just come in and start working when other people have been directing a project with their own vision. Especially when there is only 3 weeks left in the shoot. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see reports in a few weeks that the movie will go through extensive re-shoots.
For what it is worth, the movie is still scheduled to be released in May of 2018 and shooting is scheduled to restart on July 10.
