Gwen Stefani says that her relationship with Blake Shelton saved her.
Both Gwen and Blake were going through divorces from other music stars at the same time last year. They were also serving as coaches on The Voice. That gave them the chance to become more than colleagues and a friendship blossomed through supporting each other.
Gwen tells Refinery29 that the friendship she found with Blake was a Godsend, “It was a really super-unexpected gift to find a friend, somebody who happened to be going through the exact same thing as me, literally mirroring my experience. I don’t think it’s an accident that that happened. It saved me.”
In the time after the divorce Gwen says she poured herself into her music, which Blake also helped out with. While he didn’t (and doesn’t) influence her musically, according to Gwen their relationship did have an impact on the songs she created.”I didn’t have any kind of musical direction for this album. Every song was written around emotions,” she reveals, adding, “Of course (our relationship) was an influence.” Gwen has already confirmed that her song “Make Me Like You” is about Blake.
Blake’s music has also been pushed by the life events he was going through. He previously said in an interview that while his divorce was happening and afterward he had written more than he had in 15 years. Blake is set to release his 12th studio album If I’m Honest May 20th. He has said that the album will give fans a window into his life over the past year and a half, both good and bad parts.
There are rumors that the new album features a duet with Gwen.
He just released the debut single from the project last week and it has already proven to be a hit. The song is called “Came Here To Forget” and might make you think it was written by Blake himself about a night out with Gwen. However, it was not written in nay part by Blake.
The song hit the #1 spot on the iTunes all-genre chart quickly after being released selling more than 53,000 copies in the first three days after its release. The song is also finding fast radio success as it debuted at #26 on the Mediabase/Country Aircheck singles chart this week and became the “Most Added” song of the week on the Billboard Country Airplay chart debuting at #18, tying his highest debut ever.
If nothing else, the two have found a muse for their music in each other. Obviously though it is really much more than that no matter what path their relationship ultimately ends up on.
