Blake Shelton says that when it comes to songs on albums and on the radio, an artist can’t be serious all the time. Sometimes with songs you “gotta do something goofy.”

Blake can be considered somewhat of an expert on this subject when you consider that over his career he has amassed 20 chart topping singles. The last 15 of those #1 songs have come in record breaking consecutive fashion.

Many of those number one songs were songs with serious lyrics like “Austin,” “The Baby,” “Mine Would Be You” and “God Gave Me You” to name some. However, some were songs that are obviously all about fun like “Boys ‘Round Here” and “Hillbilly Bone” not to mention his current single “Gonna.”

Blake credits one of his heroes with helping him come to this opinion, “I think, every now and then and I read one time, you know, Conway (Twitty) thought this way too, you know you’ve gotta shake things up. You can’t just put out one love song after another. You gotta do something goofy you gotta take people by surprise.”

Blake knows that these goofy songs are not works of art, “every now and then in my career there’ll be a song like ‘Boys ‘Round Here’ or ‘Hillbilly Bone’ or something that’s…I mean let’s be honest they’re ridiculous, these songs are ridiculous.”

However, that does not mean that fans do not appreciate and relate to those songs because they want to have fun too, “man, these songs they really connect with people… What’s the fun in music if everything is so serious and has this underlining deep message,” Blake explains.

I have to say that I agree 100% with Blake. I have been in the country music-radio industry for many years now, I call the songs “meat and potatoes songs” and “ear candy songs.” While you need the “meat and potatoes songs” that describe real life (both good and bad), you also have to take a break once in awhile for just some fun “ear candy songs” to keep an even balance.
