On Wednesday (September 24), Darius Rucker revealed that he has formed a supergroup called Howl Owl Howl with R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills and Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman. According to a press release, the band’s sound “fuses organic roots rock with an open-minded alternative flair.” The trio will release their debut single, “My Cologne,” on October 31, before launching their inaugural tour on November 3 in Indianapolis, though no album release date has been announced. Howl Owl Howl was born from informal jam sessions dating back to 2021, with the group planning to mix original songs with classics from their previous bands during the 9-date tour, which includes stops in Chicago, Washington DC, Boston, New York, and Atlanta. “It feels great to be singing with a rock band again,” Rucker says in a statement. “It’s like buddies getting together, but also getting to play with your idols.” Mills adds, “We all like each other. And we all admire each other musically. All those things come together and if it weren’t fun, we wouldn’t be doing it.” (Rolling Stone)
