Drinking an extra cup of coffee every day can lead to weight loss, a new study has found.

Published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study found that people who drank a second cup of coffee every day – without making any other dietary changes – lost an average of .26 pounds over a four-year period. However, adding just one teaspoon of sugar “cancels” the slimming properties of coffee – and in many cases, causes a weight increase of about .20 pounds over the same period, researchers found.

“Increasing intake of a warm, low- to no-calorie beverage may improve body weight,” says New Jersey dietitian Erin Palinski-Wade. “Increasing fluids, especially warm fluids, can improve the feeling of satiety, which may lead to fewer overall calories consumed throughout the day.”
