I’m not sure what the odds are that this falling satellite will hit YOU. However, NASA says that there is a 1 in 2,467 chance it will fall on somebody!
NASA says that its retired Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) spacecraft will fall to Earth sometime today. They call the 1 in 2,467 chance it crushes somebody a “low” chance.
The RHESSI (pictured above) was used to observe solar flares from the sun from 2002 until it was decommissioned five years ago. It has been slowly falling out of orbit ever since.
The satellite is not small as it weighs around 660 pounds. NASA is hoping that most of it burns up as it reenters Earth’s atmosphere. The estimated time of reentry is around 9:30 p.m. EDT tonight. However, there is a margin of error for the time of +/- 16 hours.
