Carly Pearce Says Her Music Video for “What He Didn’t Do” Made her Mom Cry

Carly Pearce’s latest single “What he Didn’t Do” is about a very difficult time in her life. It is a song about her divorce.

Carly and the music video director Alexa Campbell decided to take a more artistic approach to the story rather than a literal one. The music video features Carly swimming underwater in a beautiful white wedding gown and fighting to get to the surface. The symbolism is both beautiful and powerful. When Carly played the music video for her mom, the power of the imagery was evident.

“Yeah, I played it for her, and I thought that she would really love it just because it’s so beautiful. And she started crying when it was over, and she told me that she didn’t like it. And I asked her why, and she said because it’s too real of what happened. And I was kind of like, ‘That’s great, Mom. That’s exactly what I was lookin’ for. Thank you.’ But as a mother I think she knew what I was trying to convey throughout the video, and I think it took her to a real emotional place of knowing that I really did feel like I was drowning.”

The music video is one of two nominations Carly has for this year’s CMT Music Awards. It is nominated for Female Video of the Year. The awards are fan-voted and you can vote at vote.cmt.com. The 2023 CMT Music Awards will air live from Austin, Texas’ Moody Center on 8 p.m. this Sunday (4/2) on CBS.
