Luke Combs is getting ready to drop his new album Gettin’ Old. The singer-songwriter shares the inspiration that led to the project that is a partner to his current album Growin’ Up.
“How it kind of came to be was, you know, all the songs that were on Growin’ Up, and the songs that are now in this one Gettin’ Old, were all kind of recorded in the same era I guess. And what I mean by that is, you know, we were in the studio a bunch and recording what was then going to be, you know, my third album, right. And as I began to compile the kind of this list of songs, we must have recorded 40. Probably, or something over two years. And I mean, to like, pretty much to completion, you know, I mean, almost, to mixing/mastering level. And as I began to kind of compile the tracklist of what was going to be Growin’ Up, I was having so much trouble coming up with this tracklist because I was like, there’s like, these two sets of songs that are so like, markedly different from each other. And I thought, well, I’ve got this song called ‘Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old’, which the hook of is, in the middle of growing up and getting old, which is really, where I feel like I am, right? It’s like, I’m not getting old, but I’m not growing up anymore. It’s ya know, I’m a dad now, I’ve reached, you know, a pretty awesome level of success in my career. And, and it’s just this crazy juxtaposition, right? Like, that’s where I feel like I am, it’s like, when I’m home, I’m changing diapers, and when I’m not home, I’m onstage performing in front of thousands of people. And it’s like, it’s just so crazy different. And that’s where a lot of these songs kind of came from, you know, is that headspace. You know, of just feeling that way. And so then I realized, well, my songwriting and what I want to do sonically in the studio has changed. But all these songs kind of existed at the same time, right? And so I wanted to kind of showcase that there is this marked difference of where my music has been and where it maybe is going. And this was, to me the best way of doing that.”
Gettin’ Old is set to drop March 24th, the eve of the start of Luke’s world tour.
