We had the privilege of inviting some teachers and students from Prairie Central High School into the studio this morning to talk to us about some student driven projects that the students have been able to be involved in this school year.
Their teachers are calling them next generation scientists, and the work they are doing for our communities is beyond amazing!
Jeana Forsyth, one of the teachers at Prairie Central High School, sent me some information about the students’ work testing the water in the Vermillion River…
Prairie Central High School Science Department will be participating in the Lil’ Miss Atrazine (Atrazine in the surface water: Design Challenge 2015) in conjunction with the University of Nebraska at Omaha. We have a team of students that will be working with Mrs. Morris and myself after school every Wednesday from April 22nd-June 24th. We will be testing for Atrazine at six different locations along the Vermilion River.
To complete this Challenge, we will be working with the following school districts: Pontiac Township HS, Tri-Point HS, Riverview Grade School & Hollis Grade School. This is a project that is only being done by these schools through out the U.S. The students from these schools were represented on Monday April 20th, 2015 at the Sun Foundation Clean Water Celebration 2015 as our schools kicked off the Lil’ Miss Atrazine Challenge.
Paul Meister, another teacher at PCHS, also had the opportunity to broaden some young minds and give them some hands on experience with some near space exploration as they sent a High Altitude Weather Balloon into the atmosphere, equipped with a video camera and tons of high tech stuff. The video that was shot was out of this world (kind of)…
Congratulations to these awesome students! I’m sure they had a blast with these special projects and it opened their eyes to how fun learning can be! You are all lucky to have cool teachers, like Jeana and Paul, that give you hands on, real-life experiences in the classroom.
