Singer-songwriter Gary Allan has a unique way of dealing with the dress code at the country club in Nashville where he plays golf. He wears knickers to hit the links.
Gary started playing golf when the guitar player from his band told him he wanted to go play golf for his birthday. Gary and the band obliged the birthday boy and a new hobby was born for the group. They all took lessons and began chasing the little ball around golf courses.
The next issue was what to do when they were at home in Nashville and not on the road on tour. Gary decided to join a country club in the Nashville area and got his band to do the same. The next issue was, like most country clubs, there is a dress code when hitting the links. “We didn’t have any clothes to get into the country club, [laughs] ‘cause you have to dress like an accountant pretty much,” Gary said, adding: “I feel equally uncomfortable dressed as an accountant.”
So, what solution did Gary and his band come up with for the dress code? “We thought it’d be more fun to buy knickers and make fun of the dress code, so that’s what we do,” Gary laughingly reveals. How did the other members and staff at the country club respond to the traditional golf attire worn by Gary and his band? “They didn’t know what to think of us at first,” Gary says: “but now they like us.”
To all my Music City friends, PLEASE get a picture of Gary Allan and his band playing golf in knickers and post it for us all to see!
