(NEW YORK) -- Is Matt Lauer's future in the game show business?  The New York Post reports the current Today show host is the front-runner to replace Alex Trebek as host of Jeopardy! in three years.

There have been rumors that Lauer is in danger of losing his job with NBC's Today show due to its ratings slump, and the Post's sources say that Lauer is "at the top of the list" of potential Trebek replacements.  Trebek is expected to leave Jeopardy! in 2016.

The newspaper further reports that another newsman, Anderson Cooper, is also in the mix, and that "he likes the idea" of hosting Jeopardy!  Cooper has some game show experience, having hosted the reality series The Mole.

Deadline.com says Jeopardy! producer Sony Pictures Television has had "exploratory conversations" with Lauer, Cooper, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams and NBC Sports' Dan Patrick.
