Country music singer-songwriter Lauren Alaina opened up about ending her engagement with Alex Hopkins.

2018 was a tough year for Lauren. Her beloved step-father Sam Ramker was diagnosed with advanced cancer. He and her mother moved in with Lauren in Nashville so that Sam could receive treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Sadly he lost his battle with cancer in October of last year.

While Lauren was dealing with her step-father’s health situation, her relationship with Alex was also facing major challenges. The couple had been together for six years. However, following their engagement in July last year People.com reports that the two started realizing marriage might not be in the cards for them.

“We started dating at 17, and we’re now 24 years old,” she said. “We’re very different people, and we have different goals, and we want to go different places in life. When we got engaged, it got really real. Not that it wasn’t real before, but it was just like, ‘Oh.’ When you start planning your entire future and you’re not agreeing on things, it’s very hard. But he was all I knew, and I was all he knew.”

While Lauren confesses Alex will forever be special to her and she will “love him until the day that I die,” she also admits that, “just doesn’t make him the person that I’m supposed to be with forever.”
